What is coaching?

In the 1500's, the word coach described a horse drawn vehicle that would get people from where they were to where they wanted to be. Many years later big buses with many rows of seats also were called coaches and served the same purpose. Coaching, therefore, is the practice of enabling individuals and groups to move from where they are to where they want to be.

The goal was similar in the ancient athletic world, where gifted athletes and teams were boasted in their performance to get to the goal of winning Olympic Games. Life Coaching today is done with groups and individually. It serves the same purpose - getting people from where they are to where they want to be while tapping into their inner potential in order to live purposefully.

What happens in coaching?

Coaching creates a better awareness of where a person is at presently. What are his or her strengths, weaknesses, abilities, interests, passions, spiritual gifts, values, world views, and hopes? Often the coach will use assessment tools to enable people to learn more about themselves. Self-Discovery.

Then comes vision. Coaching might assist people, organizations, or ministries in formulating life-vision or mission statements. Coaches might ask, for example, "Considering your gifts, abilities, driving passions, and unique God-given personality, what is your life vision?" Your Purpose is your Why. Your Vision is your How. It takes time to answer a question like that, but without a clear vision, people, ministries, organizations, and even governments tend to drift with no direction. How do we do this?

“The chasm between achieving and dreaming is discipline” - Trista Sue. Discipline is inevitable where there is a clear vision. Without one people live haphazardly and procrastinate. It is said that a person will be in the same place he or she was two years prior without a concrete vision and plan.
